This forced co-operation also carries over to how the loot is handled. It’s all on a timer, though, so if you ignore your team mate and they die, the game resets to the last save point. If you do get knocked down below zero health, a nearby character can revive you (a good twist to this familiar concept is that, if you are near death, you can crawl to another character to get a revive rather than force them to come to you). Enemies burst through and climb down walls, explode, breath gas, and can quickly overcome you if you don’t work as a team. The designers have taken the standard Lord of the Rings monsters and set up some challenging combat scenarios. With the Elven caster character, it is tempting to go down the damage skill tree to increase her ranged offensive magic capabilities but, for online play, her best skills lay in how she can heal other party members.Ĭombat, while not complex, can be very exciting. Guided arrows and increased damage means he can quickly take down his foes. The Ranger, who’s all about dealing damage from a distance, has a good ranged skill tree – and, unlike the Dwarf, has a lot more ammunition to throw about. WIth the right combination of skill points, he pulls in the enemies and holds their attention while the other members of the team wear them down. The Dwarf, despite having some ranged combat skills with his crossbow, is largely the tank of the team. This is very important when it comes to online play, where success comes from understanding the role of each of the characters. What we liked a lot is the way that the design is all about complimentary skills between characters. You also have special moves, class-specific abilities, and a simple – but well thought out – role-playing element.Įach character can then be further fleshed out by way of three different skill trees, where they can specialise and gain abilities in ranged combat, melee, and support skills. The game format is a standard third-person hack and slash, where combos and critical-hits are rewarded with greater damage. Farin the Dwarf, Andriel the Elf, and Eradan the human Ranger, as they hold the forces of evil in check in the northern regions of Middle Earth. Lord of the Rings: War in the North follows the trials and tribulations of three such heroes. What you might have missed, however, is that there were other heroes involved, too. If it wasn't for the game's graphics, combat and connection to the Lord of the Rings franchise, I would've given it a failing score.Since we’ve all read Lord of the Rings (you haven’t? You must have been living in a troll cave!), we already know all about its comprehensive and detailed telling of the journey of the fellowship. Its just not a very good game, and I cannot recommend you buy it. It goes from easy, to insanely hard, to easy. Instead of placing visible barriers, you will constantly hit invisible walls when playing. There is no character development (there doesn't need to be, but in this case, it couldn't hurt), barely any unique story, and the coding is sub par. The english characters of the franchise are voiced by American voice actors, which I find to be unacceptable. It started off strong, with great graphics and good combat. But, I was very disappointed with this game. My dad got me any and all the Lord of the Rings video games out there, and let me tell you, I loved all of em. My dad got me any and all the Lord of the Rings video games out there, and let me tell you, I Growing up, I was a huge Lord of the Rings fan. Growing up, I was a huge Lord of the Rings fan. This game will please LOTR fans, but unfortunately it will not make any new LOTR fans. I payed $20 for the game, and I feel like I got what I payed for out of it, but no more. I had no issues with bugs like some of the other guys. I actually found some of the voice acting pretty lame at times, but it was average on the whole, I suppose. The three playable characters have different play styles which can accommodate most players But it's still just a hack&slash. Equipment management is pretty lacking, with a rather unfriendly equipment interface. The game play is a classic hack&slash with little variation. That being said, the story is very linear, and the same should be said about the levels. Accurate and interesting LOTR lore is what kept me wanting to play. This game is great for RPG'ers that love getting into the nitty-gritty when it comes to learning about other characters and lore of the game.
